Language Arts: This month spelling is in full swing. The students will start having weekly tests on each full week of school. They will get their spelling lists on Friday for the following week. Please help them study their words at home. The more they study at home, the more confident they are when they take the test. They will take the test on Thursday and if they get all ten words correct they don’t have to take the test again. However, if they miss any words on Thursday, they get an opportunity to try for a better score on Friday. We are also going to start really focusing on sight words. Each week your child will also be learning ten new sight words. These words are on their homework for the week. Practice these words at home. The more sight words your child knows the better they will do at reading.
Math: This month we are going to be kick-starting addition. The students are going to be learning to add with solid objects. Then they will start learning to add with other tools, such as a number line, tally marks, etc. We also will be doing more mental math activities to help the students with different mathematical concepts.
Science: This month we are going to be learning about foods. We are going to be learning about the different food groups, how to make a healthy plate, and what foods they should eat each day. We will be learning about why foods are important and how much of each type of food we should eat.
Social Studies: This month we are going to be learning the days of the week and the months of the year. We are also going to be learning the different holidays and what things that families do traditionally. We will also be starting our state lessons. Each week we will be learning about two different states. The kids will learn what the state flags look like and what the state birds, mammals, and flowers are. The class will also start to learn about voting.
