Language Arts:  This month we are going to be learning the “th” sound and how to use it in words.  We will also be leaning about short vowel e and short vowel u.  Please continue working on the spelling words and sight words.  The kids are very excited about the sight word race.  Each child has a character on the wall outside my classroom.  As they learn sight words, they move along the wall in a “race” to the end.  The goal is to reach 200 sight words by the end of the year.  It may seem like a lot, but you will be surprised to see just how many your child knows by the end of the year.  Keep working on them at home and they will reach that goal.

Math:  This month we are going to start fast math.  Fast math is a fun game that the kids really enjoy doing.  It involves doing as many addition problems as they can in two minutes.  The kids get really excited about this game and in the past it has been a very big deal in class.  The problems start off easy (+ 0 and +1) and get harder as the year goes on (+4 and +5).  This helps the kids get faster and more efficient at doing addition.

Science:  This month  we are doing an animal lesson.  The kids will be learning about all different types of animals, where they live, and what they eat.  They will be learning about all different types of animals.  We will also be talking about our pets.  If you have a pet at home, talk to your child about it.  Tell your child what kind of animal it is, how old it is, or what it eats.  The more they know about their pet, the more they can share with the class.

Social Studies:  This month is going to be about families.  We will be learning about how each family is different from others.  We will be talking about who is in a family.  We are also going to be talking about the thanksgiving holiday and what each child is thankful for.  I will be sending home a turkey project this month.  Each child will have a turkey sent home to decorate with their family.  Please help your child make their turkey look special.  Return it to school and it will be displayed in the hall.
