Math:

We are working on money and values. This is something that a lot of students are struggling with. A great tip for helping your child with coin names and values is to pull your lose change out of your pocket and tell your child if they can tell you the name of the coin and how much it is that they can have it. Children really enjoy getting coins to save (or spend). If you want you can start with just coin names. When they know those add the values. If they learn all the coins and the values you can challenge them to add up all the coins to find the total. This process may take awhile, but the student will be motivated to learn them if they get to keep the money.

Theme:

December’s theme is dinosaurs. This is one of the class favorites. The students will learn names of dinosaurs. They will also be learning about carnivores and herbivores. This is a fun theme. We get to make a volcano explode and dig up fossils. We will be learning key words, such as: fossil, extinct, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, and volcano.

Math:

This month for math we are learning practicing counting by 10s, 5s, and 1s to 100. We are also working on reading two digit numbers from left to right. Some students struggle with reading two digit numbers because they read it from right to left instead of left to right. We will continue doing two worksheets a week as well as playing multiple games to strengthen their number skills.

If you have some free time, play a game with your child called TOP IT. This is a two player game. Start with a stack of cards, shuffled and upside down in the middle. Each person turns over a card. The player with the higher card takes both turned over cards. You continue turning over the cards until the entire deck has been turned over. The players each count their cards. The person with the most cards wins. This game helps the student learn to quickly identify which number is more/less. This also helps with number identification for students who are still struggling with knowing their numbers quickly and easily.
